Moving & Handling

Moving and handling practical training teaches safe techniques for assisting, lifting, transferring and repositioning individuals in health and social care settings and industry. It provides hands-on practice using equipment like hoists and slings to reinforce proper body mechanics and procedures.

It’s estimated that around 249 million hours of home care are delivered each year, as an essential part of assisting with personal care and enabling vulnerable people to live as independently as possible. Assistance from carers can often involve lifting which must be managed in order to reduce the risk of short and long term injury, as well as the potential for musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

Lifting in particular poses a big risk to both the lifter and especially to the person being lifted for healthcare organisations, including; hospitals, care homes, leisure and education, as poor lifting techniques and incorrect equipment can in fact make existing conditions worse for both parties. Specialist equipment is on the market to assist, but staff need to know when and how to use it.

This course is made up of the following modules:

  • Introduction to moving and handling

  • Risk assessment
